Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Trees 30–55 m tall.

Stems: Bark white to bluish gray, smooth throughout, or rough and flaky from base of trunk up to 4 m.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Adult Alternate. Blades lanceolate, 9–17 cm long, 2–3 cm wide. Apex acuminate. Blades discolorous. Margins entire. Petioles 15–25 mm long. Stipules vestigial or absent.

Flowers: Flowers 7–11 in axillary, simple umbels, peduncles 4–18 mm long, pedicels 0–3 mm long. buds fusiform to subovoid, 5–7 mm long, 3–4 mm wide. Flowers bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic. Calyx modified into an operculum; operculum conical. Stamens numerous, in several whorls; anthers dithecal. Ovary inferior; ovule placentation axile.

Fruit: Fruit cylindrical; campanulate; or subpyriform; 5–8 mm long; 4–7 mm wide; valves 3–4; exserted; out–curved. Seeds numerous.

Ploidy: 2n = 22

Habitat: Extensively planted on Kaua'i; O'ahu; Molokai; Maui; and Hawai'i; and regenerating from seed in these areas.
